5 things to know about Purdue Boilermakers, a drink Sea Bass ordered in 'Dumb and Dumber'

Tennessee (31-5) will play Purdue (25-9) on Thursday (7:29 p.m. ET, TBS) in Louisville, Ky., with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line.

Here are five things to know about Tennessee's next NCAA Tournament opponent.

Vols beat Purdue last season

This will be a rematch of a Nov. 22, 2017, game in the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. The Vols beat the Boilermakers 78-75 in overtime.

Lamonte Turner's 3-pointer with 5.1 seconds remaining in regulation sent the game to overtime. A Grant Williams jumper gave the Vols the lead for good with 14 seconds remaining in overtime.

Carsen Edwards is the engine

Purdue guard Carsen Edwards, a first-team All-Big Ten selection, is the straw that stirs the Boilermakers. He leads the Big Ten in scoring at 23.6 points per game.

Edwards isn't shy about getting up his shots. He averages 19.3 field-goal attempts per game. He shoots a modest 38.9 percent from the field, but that includes a clip of 34.6 percent from 3-point range.

Edwards has attempted 656 field goals this season. By comparison, Admiral Schofield leads UT in field-goal attempts with 487.

Edwards has 68 points through two NCAA Tournament games, including 42 in a second-round win over Villanova.

Matt Painter and Cuonzo Martin connection

Purdue coach Matt Painter and former Vols coach Cuonzo Martin each played at Purdue under legendary Boilermakers coach Gene Keady, although they weren't on the team at the same time. Painter scored 490 points during his Purdue career that spanned 1989-93.

Although Painter and Martin didn't play together, they did coach together.

Painter was Purdue's associate coach under Keady for the 2004-05 season, and Martin was an assistant. Painter took the reins from Keady after that season, and Martin remained on Painter's staff, ascending to associate coach, before Missouri State hired him as its coach in 2008.

Martin now coaches Missouri.

How Purdue became the Boilermakers

So just what the heck is a boilermaker? Basically, it's a tradesperson who makes boilers or vessels that hold liquids or gasses.

And how did Purdue become the Boilermakers?

According to the athletics department, in 1891, Purdue's football team thumped Wabash College from Crawfordsville, Ind., 44-0.

A headline in the Daily Argus News, a now-defunct newspaper in Crawfordsville, declared it a "Slaughter of Innocents." The subheadline read: "Wabash Snowed Completely Under by the Burly Boiler Makers from Purdue."

The name stuck.

Of course, there's another type of boilermaker. It's a drink featuring a shot of whiskey dropped into a beer. Some say you should consume the shot and the beer separately, but that doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the thing.

In the movie "Dumb and Dumber," Jim Carrey's character Lloyd Christmas buries the hatchet with Sea Bass and his friends by ordering them four boilermakers. Of course, Lloyd gets the last laugh when he sticks Sea Bass with his lunch tab.

Neil Armstrong went to Purdue

The Cradle of Quarterbacks? Meh. Purdue is the Cradle of Astronauts

Purdue has produced 24 NASA astronauts.

That includes Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, and Gene Cernan, the most recent person to walk on the moon.

Also among Purdue's astronauts is Gus Grissom, the second American in space.
